Max for Live (.amxd file) : Generative Sequencer for Atonal Motion, Pandiatonic Fields, Equal Pitches

In tonal music, some notes pull harder than others.

A root feels stable. A leading tone wants to move. A chord tone feels more important than a passing tone. Much of traditional harmony is built from this hierarchy.

But not every musical idea needs that hierarchy.

In atonal writing, the center can disappear. In pandiatonicism, a familiar diatonic collection can be used freely, without always serving functional harmony. In electronic music, a set of pitches can become a texture, a field, or a moving surface rather than a melody that points back to a single home note.

GENE5.0.amxd was built for this kind of thinking.

It is a generative MIDI sequencer for Ableton Max for Live that treats the selected pitch material as an equal field. You choose the range, root, scale, velocity, and timing behavior. GENE5.0 moves inside that field, creating MIDI patterns where every allowed pitch can matter.

The Pitch Field Comes First

GENE5.0 is not just a random note machine.

It starts from a musical question: what happens if every allowed pitch is treated as equally available?

Once you define a range and choose a scale, the device builds the current pitch field. Diatonic, Chromatic, Octatonic, and Wholetone each create a different kind of musical space.

Diatonic can become a pandiatonic cloud, where the notes of a key are free to move without traditional harmonic function.

Chromatic can become an atonal field, where all twelve notes are open and no pitch is automatically privileged.

Octatonic creates a symmetrical field of tension, useful for metallic patterns, angular phrases, and unstable harmonic pressure.

Wholetone creates a suspended field, useful for floating motion, synthetic textures, and unresolved melodic material.

MinNote Defines the Root

In GENE5.0, MinNote is not only the bottom of the range.

It is also the root of the selected pitch field.

When MinNote changes, the scale moves with it. This means the selected pitch collection is not locked to C. Diatonic, Chromatic, Octatonic, and Wholetone all follow the current MinNote root.

The lower edge of the range becomes the musical anchor.

Equal Probability, Not Accidental Bias

A basic random generator can create unwanted emphasis.

It might repeat one note too often while ignoring another note that should have the same musical weight. For music based on pitch equality, that kind of bias matters.

GENE5.0 uses a shuffle bag style selection method.

Inside the current range, it builds the full set of allowed MIDI notes. It then chooses from that set so each allowed pitch has a fair chance to appear before the field is refreshed.

The result is still unpredictable, but the distribution is more balanced. This makes the device useful for atonal motion, pandiatonic writing, generative melody, and equal pitch field composition.

Two Ways to Move Through the Field

Sequence mode keeps the generated MIDI closer to the session grid. Use it when the pattern should feel connected to the timeline and rhythmic structure of the track.

Random mode lets the timing breathe. MinNumber and MaxNumber define the range for the next interval. The phrase expands and contracts instead of repeating a fixed rhythm.

Both modes share the same pitch logic. The difference is how time moves.

Random Timing With a Visible Cycle

In Random mode, the Cycle bar shows the movement toward the next random note.

A note is generated. The cycle resets. The bar begins moving again toward the next event.

The random note duration follows the next interval, so the MIDI can continue without intentional silent gaps between events. This makes Random mode useful for fluid synth lines, unstable bass motion, ambient figures, and generative phrases that feel alive without becoming completely uncontrolled.

Production Uses

Use Diatonic when you want pandiatonic movement inside a familiar pitch collection, without forcing the phrase into traditional chord function.

Use Chromatic when you want atonal equal pitch motion, experimental MIDI lines, pitch based percussion, or patterns where no note should automatically become the center.

Use Octatonic for tension, symmetry, metallic movement, and angular electronic phrases.

Use Wholetone for floating textures, unresolved melodic motion, ambient layers, and synthetic harmonic drift.

GENE5.0 can also be used as a sketching tool. Place it before an instrument, record the MIDI output into a clip, then edit the best moments by hand.
